Plant Allium Drumbstick bulbs in fall, and in late spring to early summer, they bloom in large, egg-shaped flower heads dense with tiny rose-purple florets. Borne on tall, elegant stems, the stunning, long-lasting blooms have a mild fragrance and a stylish, modern appeal in the garden. They make chic floral displays, fresh and dried. Butterflies and bees adore them, but deer typically ignore them.
An Allium sphaerocephalon variety, commonly called ornamental onion, round-headed leek, or drumbstick allium, this plant is a bulbuous perennial that multiplies every year and naturalizes, forming dense clumps of cylindrical, grassy, gray-green leaves over time. It is shown to best effect when massed or grouped in mixed beds, borders, or containers.
Bulbs are so easy to grow, they're virtually foolproof. Ornamental onion grows almost anywhere but performs best in sunny to partially shady locations with fertile, well-draining soil. Plant at a depth of 3 to 5 inches. Once established, they are drought tolerant.
