Description / Aronia Berry Scape® Red Aronia
Aronia Berry Scape® Red Aronia
Berry Scape® Red Aronia (Aronia arbutifolia 'UCONNAA001') is a compact native shrub that brings a dynamic display of color and resilience to the landscape. In spring, this aronia bursts into bloom with an abundance of white flowers. As the season progresses, clusters of bead-like berries appear, transitioning from yellow to orange to rich red. These striking fruits are complemented by bright red fall foliage, creating a vibrant and long-lasting autumn show.
Reaching just 5 to 6 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide, Berry Scape® Red is a third the size of traditional 'Brilliantissima' aronia, making it more versatile for beds, borders, hedges, and mass plantings. Its mounded form offers year-round structure with minimal maintenance.
Native from Ontario to Texas, this selection thrives in full sun to part shade and tolerates clay, drought, heat, and even salt—making it one of the toughest ornamental shrubs available. It attracts pollinators like bees and delivers standout performance in challenging conditions.
Developed by Dr. Mark Brand at the University of Connecticut, Berry Scape® Red Aronia is part of the Proven Winners® Color Choice® Flowering Shrubs collection, trusted for durability, beauty, and ecological value.
