Description / Bergenia 'Winter Glow'

Classic color in the shade garden! Winter Glow (also known by the German form of its name, Winterglut) provides shades of bronze, pink, scarlet, and burgundy just when the border needs it most! Handsome, easy to grow, and downright fun (thanks to its name!), Pigsqueak belongs in every garden!

The thick foliage, bright green until turning glowing shades of bronze and scarlet in the fall, is striking, especially in winter, when it glows among the muted grays and browns of most of the garden. And it is the leaves that give Pigsqueak its name: if you rub them between your fingers, you will hear a sound resembling the squeal of a pig!

In addition to its lovely foliage color changes, Winter Glow also blooms heavily in spring, occasionally encoring in fall. The flowers are rosy pink and held in a tight cluster above the foliage. Very showy and long-lasting!

Left alone by nibbling rabbits and deer, Winter Glow reaches 12 to 15 inches high and 12 inches wide -- a good size for the front or middle of the border. It tolerates dry shade, does not mind salt spray from coastal settings, and once established is very adaptable to imperfect soils and environmental stresses. This is a plant that will see you through the tough times. We urge you to make it part of your permanent shade garden! Zones 3-8.
