All-America Selections (AAS) Winner 1998

Garden Merit Award from the Royal Horticulture Society

These brilliantly-colored stems are so beautiful that you may forget to harvest the succulent, sweet leaves. Electric yellows, pinks, crimsons, oranges, purples, whites, and greens—some even striped—festoon the 20-inch stems. Many keep their color even after cooking, and all are delightfully festive.

Bright Lights is a mix of green- and black-leaved Swiss Chard in all brilliant colors, including stripes, streaks, and bicolors. It's utterly eye-catching in garden or container, which is one reason it has received both an All-America Selection and an Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticulture Society. The other reason is flavor—these stems keep their colors even after light cooking, and have a rich, crisp, peppery bite. The star of the cool-season veggie garden.

Great in containers and showy enough for the flower garden, Bright Lights is a classic asked for by name in nurseries and garden centers. Like all Swiss chard, it grows readily from seed, and will regrow if leaves are cut back to 2 inches from the crown. Both leaves and stems are delicious.

Grow indoors. This is one of our favorite veggie greens. 1 people found this helpful

I grow most of our veggies and herbs in my large indoor garden. Swiss chard bright lights is one our favorites. The plants from this pack supply a variety of color variations in both leaves and stems. The stems can be red, orange, yellow, or striped. The leaves of the different plants can vary from red, dark green, and light green depending on the plant. I grow single plants in 10 gallon pots and eventually pot them up into a 15 gallon pot. As the plants grow, they produce side shoots that also produce an abundance of leaves. Growing them indoors, I have had productive plants for over 5 years. The plant pictured is about 1 year old and is in a 10 gallon pot. One harvest from this plant supplies us with 8 or more 10-ounce packages of frozen Swiss chard for future meals. After harvesting, these plants are ready to harvest again in about 6 weeks. Swiss chard is one of our favorite veggie greens as, when steamed, it is tender and does not have the strong bitter taste that some greens have. In addition to being a great veggie side for meals, Swiss chard also works well in soups and in recipes as a substitute for spinach.

Tasty leaves 2 people found this helpful

Beautiful plant that winters over well in 28 degree weather. Leaves and stalks can be used in soups and stews and have a distinctive pleasant flavor. Since the leaves contain salt you can use the leaves in recipes that call for salt instead.
