Description / Citrus Australian Finger Lime Tree
Citrus Australian Finger Lime Tree is a semi-dwarf cultivar is prized for both its fruit production and ornamental qualities, making it a perfect addition to any edible landscape. This beautiful tree produces clusters of fragrant pink and white blossoms in early to midsummer, leading to an abundant yield of elongated, finger-like fruits in the fall, typically from November to February in California climates. The fruit, celebrated by chefs globally, contains caviar-like pearls of juice, offering a tart lime flavor and a unique texture. These fruits are versatile, used as a conventional lime or as a visually striking topping or garnish.
Known scientifically as Microcitrus australasica and commonly referred to as the finger lime or caviar lime, this Australian finger lime is grafted onto semi-dwarf rootstock. The tree, adorned with handsome dark green foliage, stands as an excellent specimen plant. It achieves a height of 10 to 15 feet at full maturity (approximately 4 years) but can be pruned to maintain any desired size and shape. In cooler climates, this tree adapts well to container growing and can be moved indoors during winter, provided it receives sufficient sunlight. While a container-grown tree will not attain its full size, it will still flower and produce full-sized fruits. This self-fertile tree bears fruit independently, without needing pollen from other varieties.
The Citrus Australian Finger Lime Tree grows easily and requires little maintenance when grown in warm, temperate climates (Zone 10-11). Native to Australia, where it grows as an understory plant, it flourishes in filtered light but also adapts well to full sun. It favors humus-rich, well-draining soils and should be protected from strong winds and freezing temperatures.
Citrus trees will ship at the appropriate planting time based on your growing zone. Citrus trees do not ship in December or January. Plant height is 18-36" when shipped.
