Description / Coreopsis Big Bang™ 'Mercury Rising'

This is the red stunner we waited for when new colors began to be introduced into the coreopsis family. Mercury Rising surpassed our expectations with its bold color, cold tolerance, vigor. In addition, it pioneered a new habit.

A creation of breeder Darrell Probst's amazing Big Bang™ series, Coreopsis Big Bang™ 'Mercury Rising' broke new ground in a big way. It spreads, intertwining with its neighbors beautifully in the border. Only 15 to 18 inches high in bloom, it spreads 2 to 3 feet wide, with fresh green foliage framing the flowers.

The flowers begin about 1½ inches wide and then expand to fully 2 inches as they mature. And new buds open all summer, grabbing attention with their velvety magenta-claret splendor. The frilly, bright golden center sets off the dark, rich petals beautifully, and the petal undersides sport a soft shade of yellow with purple stripes.

You will be delighted not only with the quality but with the volume of these blooms over a very long season. They continue into fall, when the colder weather may bring frosty white and cream streaks creeping into the dark red, adding a new look to the display. Ever-changing, these blooms are simply fascinating.

Coreopsis Big Bang™ 'Mercury Rising' is hardy through Zone 5 in the North, with excellent vigor and color-fastness. Mildew-free and disease resistant, it attracts butterflies and bees.

Beautiful and low maintenance 1 people found this helpful

I had my eye on Mercury Rising for a year before I finally went for it. So glad I did. The plant produces lots of lovely red flowers on long, slender stems. I grow it in a container in zone 7A. Just deadhead, give it some fertilizer every couple of weeks, and stand back. Like other forms of coreopsis, it's perfect for those seeking an informal vibe in their garden.

Striking in a hosta bed 2 people found this helpful

    Rating

Was looking for an easy grower, perennial to standout in my mostly hosta beds. I have always loved the yellow ones but when I saw the claret color with yellow centers, wow!!! It now sets in a three foot opening between two dark green hostas with a small white and green dwarf hosta in the back center, which can be seen through the coreopsis. it is gorgeous!
