Description / Cotinus Winecraft Black® Smokebush
Cotinus Winecraft Black® Smokebush gives your garden a changing foliage display, from rich purple leaves to nearly black summer color and brilliant orange in fall. Early summer flowers begin red and develop the hazy violet plumes that give smokebush its familiar name. The rounded, compact habit makes this deciduous selection useful wherever foliage color is a priority. This selection is part of the Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Shrubs collection.
Try it as a specimen, in a mixed border, along a foundation, or as a hedge. It can be grown as a shrub or small tree, reaching up to 10 feet tall and 8 feet wide. Those mature dimensions help you plan a position where both its dark leaves and smoky flowers have room to contribute to the planting.
Give it full sun and a well drained site in USDA Zones 4 through 8. It tolerates dry conditions as well as alkaline and clay soils, and deer resistance adds a practical benefit. Little regular pruning is needed. Flowers form on old wood, so pruning in spring removes that year's bloom. Keep that timing in mind to enjoy both the flower plumes and the foliage that deepens toward near black before turning orange.
