Description / 'Bangkok Ruby' Ornamental Turmeric Bulbs

'Bangkok Ruby' Ornamental Turmeric is a deciduous perennial offering summer interest. An elegant, long-blooming beauty, the plant flowers abundantly in showy spires of petal-like dark pink bracts surrounding small white true flowers and repeat blooms throughout summer. Borne singly, each flower sits atop a rigid stem that makes a nice cut flower.

This easy to grow rhizomatous plant, also known as ornamental turmeric or a Siam tulip, has an upright habit of narrow, lance-shaped, dark green leaves. A tropical species and member of the ginger family, 'Bangkok Ruby' Ornamental Turmeric grows well in climates with hot, high-humidity summers. The plant prefers sun to part shade and mildly acidic to neutral, moist, well-drained soil. Although this variety is more drought tolerant than most, especially in partial shade, 'Bangkok Ruby' Ornamental Turmeric needs consistent moisture throughout the growing season in full sun and should never be allowed to dry out.

For optimal performance, add organic matter, such as compost, to soils with high sand and clay content before planting and add one of our soil enhancers in spring and summer. It requires no deadheading and is deer and rabbit resistant.

Consider planting in large groups or as an accent to blue salvia, euvolvulus, and caladium.

*NOTE: Curcuma (ornamental turmeric) is not intended for animal or human consumption

Ok, so first off these things look like little octopuses. It was unclear whether the tentacles or the head was supposed to be buried and there’s not much information online. After initially planting them upside down indoors in early spring I figured it out and flipped them around. Still, in pots outside it was late June before the first one sprouted (zone 8, god sun). If the 10, all but 2 have sprouted with the last one showing in the first week of August. Although it was a cool spring in South Carolina I am absolutely floored that they took until July and August to break dormancy (went outside in April). I seriously doubt I will get flowers this year but that’s OK. I will overwinter them in the garage (stays quite warm) with the heliconia and bird of paradise. I’m sure they’ll flower next year. Once breaking dormancy they seem to grow at a moderate pace. They have good root structure well before developing a 3rd leaf. Hopefully anyone else that bought them stuck with them and didn’t give up. I really thought they were a lost cause but since they were with other smaller plants I kept them watered. Glad I did because even if it takes awhile I am excited to add them to the rest of our tropical/subtropical collection around the pool.
