Description / Fire Spinner® Iceplant

Just wait until you experience Fire Spinner® Iceplant's quick spread, heavy bloom, and long season of color in your own sunny garden. If you're looking for something bright to cover that poor, dry soil beside the driveway, in the sunny border, or along a slope where the hose can't reach, Fire Spinner® Iceplant is EXACTLY what you need.

This hardy iceplant is a marvel. It will spread up to about a foot and a half wide within just 2 seasons of growth. When not in bloom, the small, needle-like succulent foliage of brightest green reaches just 1 to 2 inches high. When the gorgeous multicolored 1½-inch flowers begin appearing, the height increases to just 4 inches. Yet this plant forms a dense, colorful mat that chokes out weeds and retains soil moisture beautifully.

If you live in a hot, dry climate, or simply if watering is an issue over those long summer months, Fire Spinner Iceplant is the answer to your prayers. Pamper it the first season to get its root system well established, then turn it loose. Very resistant to heat, humidity, and drought—and happy in poor, sandy, and infertile soils—Fire Spinner Iceplant is unstoppable! (Looks fabulous spilling over the sides of a container, too)

This delosperma was discovered growing at a high elevation in South Africa and brought to this country by plant expert Panayoti Kelaidis of the Denver Botanic Garden. Hardy from one end of the country to the other, Fire Spinner begins flowering in late spring in most climates, continuing through midsummer. Expect hundreds of bright orange and magenta blooms to cover your garden floor, each starred with a bright white eye.

Left alone by deer, this groundcover does a great job on banks and slopes as well as level surfaces. It's your all-purpose problem-solver, asking only for full sunshine and good soil drainage. Give it a try this season and dazzle your senses with its neon-bright color show.

Incredible Ice Plant
Review by Shoeboxs Mom
I love everything about this perennial. It rapidly forms a thick mat of evergreen foliage and is one giant mass of flowers when it blooms. I am definitely more of these this year. Super easy to grow.
