Description / 'Hello Yellow' Butterfly Flower Seeds

Just about the only flower as easy to grow as native butterfly weed is this selection, large-flowered 'Hello Yellow'. Massive flowerheads fill the summer garden over a long season, attracting every honeybee, butterfly, and hummingbird in the neighborhood. A long-lived perennial that thrives in sun and just about any kind of soil, 'Hello Yellow' will become one of your most treasured plants, not only for its good looks but for its super-easy nature.

'Hello Yellow' delights with 3-inch flowerheads simply jammed with blooms. Showy seedpods follow the flowers, and these are useful in dried arrangements as well as pretty on the plant. Indifferent to heat, humidity, drought, poor soil, and more, 'Hello Yellow' is just as carefree as a perennial can be, and it seems to flower all summer long. The visiting butterflies and hummers simply add to the color show. What a glory.

'Hello Yellow' reaches 2 to 2½ feet tall and 2 feet wide, a nice size for the mixed border, blazing bed, or patio specimen. Unforgettable in a mass planting, the blooms are also good in fresh or dried displays, with good color retention and stiff texture.

Like most plants, this asclepias is happiest in well-drained soils, but it will put up with a lot of hardship, including poor, dry soil and long periods of drought. It needs full sun and plenty of it to reach its peak performance. Hardy just about anywhere in the U.S.

I bought these seeds years ago, did the cold stratification etc. I got two plants. Planted them and they looked like they died. Last year nothing, but this year I noticed some leaves and sure enough there it was! Now blooming it’s little heart out. Quite a lovely plant. Unfortunately we’ve only seen one monarch this season. Too bad I have many different flowers and milkweed. I guess plant it and they will come doesn’t always work.

I ordered Hello Yellow to entice butterflies into my garden. I followed the directions on the packet and even took the suggestion of someone else's review about putting in the fridge for a time before planting. I started them in Park's own Bio Dome - giving them a second chance after not having much success with the Bio Dome with other types of seeds in the last two years. I get germination - then nothing - no matter how diligent I am with light, heat, water. I ordered several other packets of seeds at the same time and time will tell if I have any success, but I'm really beginning to doubt the quality of Park's seeds and other products.

I had perfect germination. I mixed the seed with soil and water and put them in the fridge about 50 days before I tried to germinate them and it gave me really great germination. They plants have done very well and have matured enough to bloom in the year I planted them. They are attractive and I think the color is a nice contrast with the orange of typical butterfly weed which I have growing right beside them.

Not sure there were seeds in the package! 0 people found this helpful

I couldn't see any seeds in the package. Either they are very, very tiny or they weren't in there. I sprinkled the package over my BioDome cells and am hoping for the best.

Goodbye, Yellow... 0 people found this helpful

The seeds sprouted and grew quite well, but every single plant bloomed ORANGE. Perhaps some "Hello Yellow" got mixed up at the packaging facility with regular butterfly weed. I do like the original orange, but that was not what I'd ordered.

Incredibly short germination time - great germination rate! I just bought these. Using the wet coffee filter method, most of the seeds germinated 48 hours after sprinkling them on the wet coffee filter. They are ready to transfer to expanded peat pellets now. Wet coffee filter method: Buy a package of white coffee filters (the basket-shaped kind that go in the drip coffee maker). Put on powder-free disposable gloves. Spread a filter on a clean plate and wet it with cold water, Sprinkle seeds on bottom half, fold up filter like an envelope (fold the top down and sides in), and put in a sandwich zip lock bag. Label with permanent marker and put it on top of refrigerator in a clear shoebox (no lid) and check for germination rate twice a day. Most of our seeds sprouted within 48 hours, and we expect the rest to sprout today or tomorrow.
