Description / Hi-Lite™ Mix Torenia Seeds

Days to Maturity: 84

F1 hybrids, Hi-Lite™ Mix Torenia is a blend of low-growing, flowering annuals offering late spring through fall interest, typically blooming until first frost. The cute, velvety flowers are bicolored and tricolored in hues of white, pink, magenta, and varying shades of blue. The 1- to 2-inch blooms are long-lasting and come in abundance, creating a continuous, eye-catching show of color for months and attracting hummingbirds to the garden.

Hi-Lite Mix contains Torenia fournieri varieties, commonly called wishbone flower, clown flower, or bluewings, that are members of the snapdragon family (Plantaginaceae). Excellent garden performers, vigorous and healthy, these multi-branched plants maintain a tight, compact, mounded habit of glossy light-green foliage. Torenias are shown to best effect when massed or grouped in beds, borders, containers, or hanging baskets. They also make good houseplants and are particularly nice as a table centerpiece.

Stout and easy to grow, torenias can be grown in sun or partial shade; however, a location with morning sun and afternoon shade may be best in warmer regions. The soil should be rich and moist but well-drained and never soggy. An acidic pH of 5.5 to 5.9 is preferable. The varieties in this mix stand up to heat and humidity, resisting stretch and fade. Torenias are generally pest- and problem-free, but good air circulation is important to keep them disease-free. Nipping off the growing tip of seedlings at 3 inches tall encourages branching and bushier plants, pruning and fertilizing after flowering encourages new blooms, and mulching maintains moisture and keeps roots cool in hot climates.

Direct sow torenia seed into the garden in spring after the chance of frost has passed and the soil has warmed or start seeds indoors 10 to 12 weeks before the last frost date and transplant. The plants will grow best when day and night temperatures range between 66° and 68°F.

If you plan to start your seeds indoors, be sure to check out our Bio Dome Seed Starter Kit. With the Bio Dome, you can control the temperature, light, and soil mix to ensure your seeds become strong for transplant.

This seed comes as a pellet. Pelleted seeds are small seeds that have been clay-coated to make them larger and more uniform in size and shape, making them easier to handle when planting.

Very subject to damping off. Bought 2 packets. Only about 15 seedlings made it to true leaf stage. This under lights and with heating pad in use. Perhaps it prefers cool germinating and early growth conditions?
