Hydrangea Macchiato™ Velvet Hydrangea

Hydrangea Macchiato™ Velvet Hydrangea adds a different look to your hydrangea collection with large, velvety leaves and colorful summer flowers. Deep purple foliage gives this deciduous shrub an almost tropical appearance. In midsummer, lacecap flowers combine pink sterile florets with purple blue fertile florets, bringing several shades into a single flower head above the bold leaves. This selection is part of the Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Shrubs collection.

Use it in borders, foundation plantings, naturalized areas, or low hedges where both foliage and flowers can contribute. Plan for a mature size of up to 6 feet tall and 8 feet wide. Giving the shrub room for that spread lets its large leaves and lacecap blooms become part of the overall planting rather than treating it as a flower display alone.

Plant in full sun to part sun in USDA Zones 6b through 9. It adapts to most well drained soils, and pruning should follow flowering. Heat tolerance adds to its garden value, while foliage provides fall interest after the main summer display. Plants also survived extended periods of single digit temperatures in West Michigan trials. This selection's clearest distinction is the combination of velvety purple foliage and pink and purple blue lacecaps.
