Description / Hydrangea Next Generation® Pistachio Bigleaf Hydrangea
One look at these spectacular blooms tells you that Pistachio is the Hydrangea you've GOT to grow this season, but there are many benefits to this shrub in addition to its 4-color show. It repeats, so that even gardens in the far north can enjoy at least one season of blooms. If offers better disease resistance than older varieties. And it's so compact, you can grow it in a container.
Pistachio is one of the New Generation™ series of Hydrangeas, and we have to say that it lives up to its name. It is truly a breeding breakthrough, as every magnificently beautiful floret on these big, rounded blooms attests to. The first flush of flowers occurs in late spring, with a heavy repeat in early fall (and lasting all season). Absolutely splendid for cutting or garden enjoyment.
This shrub reaches just 2 to 2½ feet high, but can spread up to 5 feet wide. In containers, the spread will be more restrained. Wherever it is grown, it is well-branched and vigorous, with healthy toothed foliage of bright green forming a lovely backdrop for the colorful blooms.
Pistachio demonstrates better resistance to disease than older Hydrangea varieties, and its stems do a much better job of holding up the heavy blooms -- none of the flopping you see on older shrubs. That's good, because you'll want to cut a lot of these flowers for use in fresh and dried bouquets.
Best in part shade, Pistachio is hardy all the way through zone 3 in the north -- unheard of for a Hydrangea until now. And it's so compact that even if your "garden" is tubs on the patio or balcony, you can enjoy this terrific shrub. Don't miss the "New Generation" of Hydrangeas -- grow Pistachio right now.
