Description / Ideal™ Violet Dianthus Seeds

All-America Selections (AAS) Winner 1992

There are only 5 All-America Selection Classics in the world, and we are proud to say that Ideal™ Violet is one of them. Introduced in 1992, it was instantly recognized as a breeding breakthrough, and has never been bettered. This lovely variety was the first Dianthus ever to win the AAS Bedding Plant Award, and has been enjoyed in gardens of all climates ever since.

A cross of D. chinensis (China Pinks) and D. barbatus (Sweet William), Ideal™ Violet is the perfect fall and winter plant in the south, while it is unbeatable for early-spring glory in the north. Bred in the south of France where the summers are hot and the winters cold, it developed a dual tolerance of climate extremes that serves it very well indeed.

These single blooms measure about 1 1/2 inches wide, merrily fringed and shading from deep violet to magenta at the petal tips. They absolutely blanket the petite plant over their long season, beginning earlier than others and staying quite uniform in size, so that they make superb formal plantings. The plant itself is just 10 to 12 inches high and about a foot wide, growing vigorously in any sunny, well-drained spot.

Ideal™ Violet was bred by M. Guy Lassartesse. We are honored to make it available to your garden this season.

I bought a bag of this seeds early last summer just to give it a try. almost all of them budded and most of them all flowered last fall. I carelessly planted them throughout various parts of my garden. They all came back this year. They are beautiful just as what it described. I even transplanted one two weeks ago. It survived and flowered too. I am not a growers. I spend the least amount of time on gardens. These Dianthus are my favoriate, and the COLOR! I must give it a 5 star.

I started two plants from seed and summered them in pots, and they gave me the sweetest magenta-violet blooms. Slipping them into the ground with enough time to settle before winter, I hoped they survived my Zone 5 cold. This spring they came back early and lush, and the two plants are covered with... no exaggeration... hundreds of blooms! No photo seems to do this color justice. It is simply smile-provoking! I wish I had planted more... though this season I am trying the Salmon version from the "Ideal" range. Thanks for this beauty!
