Description / Kandy Korn Plus Hybrid Pumpkin Seeds
Days to Maturity: 85
Kandy Korn Plus, a miniature pumpkin, is a fruit vegetable that produces small, oblate-shaped fruit, weighing approximately 1 pound, with a smooth deep orange rind and a 3-inch dark green handle.
This herbaceous annual winter squash is a member of the cucurbit (Cucurbitaceae) family. Producing very high yields, it grows as a vining, bush-type plant with about a 4-foot spread, providing maximum yields in small spaces. Succession plantings every 2 to 3 weeks is recommended for continual harvest.
Easily grown from seed, it grows best in full sun and fertile, organically rich, medium moisture, well-drained loams. Harvest when rind is hard and deep orange. It has intermediate resistance to powdery mildew (Px). Plants are cross-pollinated, usually by insect-borne pollen.
A warm-season vegetable, sensitive to cold temperatures and frost, it can be direct sown into warm spring soil after all danger of frost has passed, but it can also be started indoors and transplanted. Flowers begin to set fruit with night temperatures between 55 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Protect plants if temperatures are expected to dip below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Mulching helps to control weeds, moderate soil temperature, and maintain soil moisture. Heavy frost damages pumpkins. Row covers offer added protection from heavy frost.
