Description / Linnaeus Burning Embers Marigold Seeds

Days to Maturity: 77 to 84

An heirloom variety, Linnaeus Burning Embers Marigold is an annual offering late spring through early fall interest, blooming until first frost in some regions. Heavy blooming, the plant sets small burnt orange-red blossoms with golden edges. The showy flowers attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds to the garden.

Linnaeus Burning Embers Marigold is a Tagetes patula variety, also known as French marigold. The plant has excellent branching and a uniform, upright, compact habit of aromatic, finely divided, bushy foliage and a vigorous growth rate. Shown to best effect when massed or grouped, French marigolds are perfect for beds, borders, and containers. Best known for repelling insects in the garden, French marigolds are often grown alongside perennials and vegetables as they repel whiteflies and kill bad nematodes.

Easy to grow, Linnaeus Burning Embers Marigold prefers full sun and average, evenly moist, well-drained soil. The plant is humidity tolerant, generally pest and disease free, and deer resistant. Although marigolds are low maintenance, pinching off the tops of established plants results in bushier plants with a heavier bloom and deadheading regularly encourages and prolongs flowering. Plants naturalize and will self-seed in the garden.

Direct sow marigold seed after the last frost and as soon as the soil is warm in spring, or start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost and transplant after all threat of frost has passed.

If you plan to start your seeds indoors, be sure to check out our Bio Dome Seed Starter Kit. With the Bio Dome, you can control the temperature, light, and soil mix to ensure your seeds become strong for transplant.

will buy again. 0 people found this helpful

I only gave this four stars because the germination was so poor that only five plants grew from the 25 seeds. They were direct sown along with other marigold varieties, that all germed fine, of shorter types, because I wanted the Burning Embers to stand above them. The plants were stunning, and the photos do not do them justice! Especially as the sun went down they attracted admirers, as they really seemed to glow. Aptly named, for sure. I loved them and will order more and hope for better germination. I got no seeds from them as my chickens got into that part of my yard and happily ate them.

Getting them to germinate as compared to Durango mix and Janie yellow, the Burning embers are not up to par. Had them on the same heat mat and under same lights, they just didn't perform as well as the other.
