Description / Lonicera Blue Velvet® Honeyberry

Beloved in Europe and Asia for centuries but almost unknown here, Honeyberry is a relative of the Honeysuckle with sweet, succulent, VERY edible fruit resembling blueberries. A shade-lover, it bears lovely white flowers in spring, followed in early summer by some of the juiciest, most delectable little berries you will ever taste. You've got to try it.

Lonicera Blue Velvet® Honeyberry is about 4 to 5 feet tall and very easy to grow in regular to poor, moist soil and any shady spot (except in the northernmost portion of its hardiness range, where some sun is preferred.) The bush bears 3 to 5 pounds of delicious berries in early summer. The 1½-inch, cylindrical blue fruit ripens about 2 weeks before strawberries in most regions, beginning the first or second year after planting. Even when not in flower or fruit, however, Lonicera Blue Velvet® Honeyberry is attractive, thanks to velvety grayish-green foliage.

Native to eastern Siberia, this hardy deciduous species is untroubled by pests or disease. Lonicera Blue Velvet® Honeyberry is a unisex type, meaning that it is NOT self-fertile but will pollinate with any other Honeyberry.

Lonicera Blue Velvet® Honeyberry has no chill requirement, and is quite long-lived (50 to 75 years of active fruiting). No fertilizer is required, but if you decide to use one, a balanced mixture such as 10-10-10 or 5-5-5 is ideal. Mulch as necessary to maintain moisture in the soil. Zones 3-8, 9 West Coast.

Planted May of 2023, in a large container on a roof top deck, zone 6. It did not grow much in it's first season. Now, in April of 2024 the plant is back, it's bigger than last year, and it's flowering. I only planted one because I was afraid it wouldn't make it over the winter. Now I need to plant a pollinator, and hopefully I'll have berries next year.

East Tennessee. My Lonicera Blue Velvet arrived yesterday as a very leafy, tall 33" x 22" wide well grown, very woody stemmed shrub already! WOW. GORGEOUS! It is in a quart container. I actually needed one Borealis Honeyberry to pollinate each other and I waited too late (may 12) to order it and it is sold out! Put my name on the waiting list and we will see what happens! Both are EARLY bloomers and that is why you need 1 of each for pollination. The staff was very helpful in determining what to buy. Will use Parks again!

The Blue Velvet Honey Berries came in excellent shape unbelievably packaged. Gallon size plant in a gallon size container. I planted them the next day the last couple of weeks I’ve seen new growth so hoping they should make it through the winter just fine.
