Description / Mini Adelaide Hybrid Carrot Seeds

Days to Maturity: 50 from direct sow

Ideal for containers and small spaces, Mini Adelaide is a true baby carrot, with rich flavor and a nice crunchy texture—all packed into just a few inches of root.

This Nantes type is mature at just 3 to 4 inches, unlike the "baby" carrots often found at the market, which are simply immature full-sized roots. These dark orange carrots, packed with nutrition, are blunt-tipped and very flavorful, having reached their peak of growth in less than 2 months. You'll love the size—they seem just right for a quick snack while gardening, and they look terrific on the plate as well.

Carrots are a cool-weather crop, best sown direct as soon as the soil is workable in spring, or in late summer for fall harvest. Heavy soils are a problem for root development, so prepare the soil thoroughly before planting or, if you are in a clay soil area, consider growing in raised beds or even containers. Carrots also need moisture to keep from splitting. With these needs met, they are virtually trouble free. Thin the seedlings to 3 inches apart. They will be ready in 2 months, or when you begin to see the orange shoulders pushing up through the soil.

We tried a couple other baby carrots seeds from other brands but these were the best performers for us! Grew fastest with the best flavor. Most of them seemed to sprout for us. Sowed directly in pots outdoors in SoCal. Buying again this year!

Sugar sweet but slow to grow (in Fall and Winter) 0 people found this helpful

I planted these the first week of September but didn't get around to harvesting until today (the 30th of December). We did have an unusually cool October/November with many cloudy days throughout. Like most carrots, getting them started can be a challenge. I keep my seeds moist by overlaying the beds with row cover (no matter the time of year) and don't pull the covers off until the seedlings are well established. Adelaide is a very sweet and mild/pleasant tasting carrot that holds its flavor better and stays crisp longer than most. I prefer to pick them at full size (3+ inches in length). I grow organically and have had the most success supplementing my carrot beds with quick acting liquid fertilizers. Just remember to keep N levels on the lower side else you end up with too much (green) on top and too little (roots - ie. carrots) on the bottom.

I've done 2 plantings and have 1 carrot top to show for it and it's only about an inch high and has been for about a month. I must be doing something wrong, terrible wrong.
