Description / Miscanthus 'Little Zebra' Maiden Grass
Miscanthus 'Little Zebra' (maiden grass) is a dwarf deciduous ornamental grass offering summer through fall interest. A bold and distinctive variety, one of the most popular ornamental grasses on the market, it grows in a rounded mound of gracefully arching variegated blades, highlighted with alternating horizontal narrow green and yellow bands. This maiden grass maintains its color throughout the season and blooms reliably every year. Its feathery, reddish purple late-summer-borne plumes rise about 1 inch above the foliage and turn creamy tan in fall, followed by seed heads that attract birds.
Miscanthus 'Little Zebra' is an herbaceous perennial plant with a dense, upright, clump-forming habit and moderate growth rate. The plant slowly naturalizes by short rhizomes. Highly versatile, it fits almost anywhere, adding a little drama to beds, borders, or naturalized areas. It makes an excellent specimen or thriller in a filler, thriller, spiller container garden and works especially well as erosion control when massed. Aster, hibiscus, phlox, rudbeckia, sedum are great companion plants for Miscanthus 'Little Zebra'.
Easy to grow and low maintenance, this maiden grass prefers full sun to part shade and moderately fertile, moist, well-drained soils but tolerates poor soils, drought, and salt. It is generally pest and disease free and deer and rabbit resistant.
