Description / Night and Day Snapdragon Seeds

One of the most striking snapdragons we have ever seen, Night and Day Snapdragon is a bold study in contrast. The deep scarlet blooms shade almost into black, revealing their parentage (the famous heirloom Snap, Black Prince) and highlighting the pure white of the lower "jaws." Absolutely stunning in the bed or border, this vibrant, brilliantly beautiful Night and Day Snapdragon deserves a place of honor in the garden.

The Night and Day Snapdragon plant grows 18 inches tall and about a foot wide, blooming in spring and fall in warm climates and all summer in cooler ones. The blooms have a strong spicy scent and arise very abundantly on robust plants. For an interesting effect, try interplanting Night and Day Snapdragon with its parent, Black Prince, which has deep crimson blooms and bronze foliage (and is the same plant size).

If you have never "snapped" a Snapdragon, here is how to do it: You'll notice that the blooms form two separate cupped clusters that meet in the middle, like jaws. Gently squeeze the sides of the jaws, and the two clusters will separate, just like a mouth opening. The space is just the right size for a child's finger to poke into the dragon's mouth. Release the bloom and the jaws "snap" closed.

Night and Day Snapdragon Seeds may be direct sown or started indoors for earlier blooms. Snaps are cool-season annuals that bloom in spring and fall in warm areas, summer in colder climates. In very warm locations they may winter over if mulched. They do best in full sun to light shade.

I love snapdragons. You cab usually get more than one season of blooms if protected. And, last year, I had snapdragons in bloom on Christmas Eve.

I grew these from seed this spring and they are still blooming after a couple frosts. They are gorgeous and striking and will bloom continuously with a little deadheading. I hope they reseed.

I am new to growing from seed and I’m pretty sure I did almost everything wrong with these seeds and seedlings, but they somehow all pulled through anyway and are blooming profusely! They are absolutely gorgeous and clearly very forgiving, tough plants.

I planted them on the west side of my magnolia gem in my front yard with park seed pink and purple petunia (the ruffled hybrid ones-awesome too!) and they are planted high up in raised area. That get about 10 hours of Texas heat... they bloomed all summer! Hopefully I can keep them till next year and the next!

When my plants bloomed they were not the color as advertised. If I wanted this purple and yellow color I would just got plants from HD. I’m so disappointed because all that hardworking was a waste of time. ????

I don't know I've had good luck with most seeds and I understand all seeds have different needs but I was very puzzled that these did not grow at all.

Striking color 1 people found this helpful

    Rating

I was looking for a showy, tough plant to brighten up sunny church gardens. These plants did well in baking Pennsylvania sun and some have wintered over and bloomed beautifully the last 3 years. They were a little slow to sprout in flats, but their deep wine-red color is striking and perfect sprinkled in among other annuals.
