All-America Selections (AAS) Winner 2015

Grow little gherkins in patio pots with this award-winning beauty. Parisian gherkin (don't you love the name) is one of the very few organic varieties ever to win an All-America Selections. But when the judges saw this compact, semi-vining plant setting masses of scrumptious little black-spined cukes, they had no choice.

Best picked at just 2 to 4 inches long (about 1 to 2 ounces), these cukes are not mushy little fall-aparts. They have texture, grip, and bite. Very crisp and flavorful, they are a delectable treat raw or sliced, but have been labeled gherkins because they hold up so well to pickling, and make the perfect little pickles for gourmet occasions as well as everyday noshing.

The plant reaches just 10 or 12 inches high, but is generously branched and sets about two dozen fruits. Of course, it can be grown in the veggie patch as well as in containers, and shows great vigor in any setting. The disease resistance package of Parisian gherkin is pretty formidable: cucumber mosaic virus, scab, and powdery mildew are no problem for this powerhouse.

Direct sow seeds in a sunny spot after all danger of frost is past, or start indoors and transplant when the first true leaf appears. Cucumbers can be allowed to grow on the ground, but for longer, straighter fruit and to save garden space, grow them in a cage or on a trellis, allowing 1 foot between plants. Keep them well watered, and keep the fruits picked promptly.

I ordered these seeds to start a second crop of cucumbers for pickling. The first crop of regular sized cukes did well. I followed the included instructions for planting and only one seed germinated . Disappointing...

These are heavy yielding and very disease resistant. Where my other pickling cucumbers are failing these are incredible! I will grow these again.

Mixed results indoor/direct sow, medium bearing, best larger than gherkin size 0 people found this helpful

    Rating

Started indoors early May (Kansas City, KS), good germination near 100% but all died except six plants. Transplants all survived. Direct sowed more in early June with also nearly 100% germination and survival -- much better results. Vines crawled and climbed everywhere; I had difficulty finding gherkins at ideal harvest size due to the huge leaves obscuring the growing cukes. Still, they had excellent flavor which I found best at about 5-6" in length. I even had one monster that grew to 10" and still was quite good. These cukes pickle very well, crunchy and flavorful. The indoor-start vines only produced for a few weeks and then died with no apparent disease. My rating of 3 is due to the poor performance of indoor starts, the difficulty of finding gherkin-size cukes to harvest at that size, the superior flavor when they get bigger instead of at gherkin size, and the fairly mediocre bearing of the vines. I would recommend this product so long as the buyer understands there may be some limitations or challenges in growing.

Disappointed 0 people found this helpful

I purchased this and another variety to harvest gherkin-sized cucumbers for pickling. Very low germination rate. Very slow to germinate. I purchased this variety and the Alibi variety also offered on this site. Alibi out-germinated, out-grew, out-produced this variety. I planted both varieties at the same time in the same soil mix. At the time of this review, I already have cucumbers days from harvest with Alibi. This variety still have not produced any female flowers for pollination. Also, this variety attracted aphids. I had a terrible infestation on this variety alone. Not a single aphid on the Alibi variety or any other plant in my garden. However, I took precautions after seeing the infestation on this variety. I won't be growing this variety again.
