Description / Park's Whopper Strawberry

Park's Whopper Strawberry is a favorite across the U.S. and Canada for its superb adaptability and tough performance in the face of adversity. This June-bearer boasts unrivalled winter hardiness, thriving even in the upper limits of zone 3. And you'll just love the flavor of these plump, bright red, juicy berries.

Park's Whopper is a heavy-bearing strawberry, easy to grow and very productive. It blooms in mid to late spring, with handsome ½ inch flowers, and then sets a big crop of ultra-sweet, tender fruit. Expect to harvest 1 to 3 pints from every plant.

Like most strawberries, Park's Whopper spreads by runners, reaching just about 6 inches high but spreading more than a foot wide. Space plants 12 inches apart for dense coverage.

This is the strawberry to grow if you have uncooperative soil or unpredictable weather. It is a classic that has been tried and found superior in garden after garden, season after season. Among the best fruit crops for the home gardener, it proudly bears the Park's Whopper name.

Your order will include 20 young bare root plant starts.

    What a shame.....

    Rating

Placed an order for these. Of the 20 "plants" they sent, 7 never grew, 9 have tiny little leaves, and ONLY 4 are actually growing and showing promise of thriving. They were planted in an ideal soil where everything else ever planted there has thrived? Park "claims" 100% satisfaction, but when contacted, they said there were no replacements as they were sold out? Park "used to" produce the best plants and vege seeds, but now, they are the 7-11 of the home gardening catalog products! Oh, they were willing to offer replacements "of some other variety", but if I wanted some other variety, I WOULD HAVE ORDERED THEM! What a shame........

    Response from store

Thank you for your feedback, and I’m truly sorry to hear about your experience.

We understand how frustrating it is when plants don’t perform as expected—especially in a garden space where you’ve seen consistent success. Unfortunately, by the time we heard from you, we were completely sold out of that variety and weren’t able to send replacements, or we absolutely would have. I do see that a refund was issued for your order, and we hope that helps offset the disappointment.

We’re always working to improve, and your comments have been shared with our team. Thank you again for taking the time to reach out.

50% survival not what I expected

    Rating

Order 20 plants, set them out right away. Looks like MAYBE 10 are showing any signs of life.

    Response from store

We're sorry to hear that many of your plants aren’t showing signs of growth—that’s definitely not the experience we want you to have. We appreciate you bringing this to our attention and will be reaching out via email to help make things right.

    Fantastic!

    Rating

I was worried with how long they took to ship and arriving on a Monday, I figured they sat in a warehouse somewhere the entire weekend. Also from some of the older reivews I worried they would arrive dried up. This was not the case at all. They came tightly packed in a plastic bag that was tied off. There was moisture inside the bag. They looked great and I received a few more plants than I paid for. All of them are growing with impressive speed. Not one bad plant. Very pleased!

    Response from store

Thank you so much for your kind and detailed review! We’re thrilled to hear that your plants arrived healthy, well-packed, and exceeded your expectations—especially after the initial concerns about shipping time and older reviews.

It’s wonderful to know that every plant is growing strong and thriving in your garden. We’re grateful you gave us the chance and so pleased to hear you're enjoying the results.

Wishing you continued success and beautiful growth this season!

    Great Start

    Rating

Recently ordered these berries for a new strawberry bed. I received them quicker than thought and the bed was not ready. Planted them in my cold frame and they sprouted up right away. I received 24 plants and they all were alive. Can’t wait to see how these little beauties do this summer.

    Response from store

Thank you so much for your review! We’re thrilled to hear that all 24 strawberry plants arrived healthy and that they took off so quickly in your cold frame. It sounds like you’re off to a fantastic start with your new strawberry bed!

We can’t wait to hear how these little beauties perform for you this summer—wishing you a season full of sweet, juicy berries!

I can't speak to how productive these plants are fruit wise but wow what a bargain for these bare root strawberry plants! All 20 of mine are looking healthy and growing like crazy! Here's to some jars of jam and jelly this year fingers crossed.

    Whopper Strawberry

    Rating

I just recieved and planted these so it is too early to review the berries but the plants got to me quickly, they sent more than 20 plants and I have only lost one plant. Some of them did not look alive when I got them but I planted them anyway and they are showing new leaves and looking great. Hope I get some berries next year!

    Impressed

Received 25 viable crowned roots. Planted today. Will update as the season progresses, that's the reason for only 4 stars. Very pleased with the quality and quantity of my strawberry plants.

    Planting for perennial bed

    Rating

These have thrived so far. The bare roots were really strong. I was delayed a couple days getting them in soil and they still started to put out leaves in the water. Once I got them in the ground, they have been springing up. I'm really hoping they overwinter really well. I'll update in the spring 2024.

    Better luck next year?

    Rating

These roots took to planting well. Only 3 didn’t survive. Lots of foliage, and tons of berries! So bright red, and so amazingly sweet and delicious! But they’re smaller than marbles…nowhere near what is falsely advertised.

    Didn't grow

    Rating

We ordered these with the Eversweet, placed in side by side beds. The Eversweet was about 100% growth, unfortunately these ones maybe 4-5 plants grew. Little disappointed, will reorder next year.

    Delicious

I wanted larger strawberries than the variety I had. These are not only big strawberries, but are deliciously sweet.

    Decent ???? plants

    Rating

I bought these Whopper strawberry plants during the pandemic. So I am on year 3 and they are still going strong. Most of the offspring runner plants I gave away to some friends. The berries definitely do not get as large as shown in the photos. (I won't discredit this might be possible in a commercial greenhouse with very controlled conditions). However, they are quite flavorful. Last year I had so many that I was able to prep and freeze them to save for smoothies in the winter. Overall, I'm satisfied, but I may try a different variety this year. The original set definitely exceeded my expectations in terms of foliage and longevity.

    Beautiful plants!

    Rating

I am so excited I purchased these. All of the plants had green foliage growing within days of planting them.

    Doing fine!

    Rating

Doing fine one month out. 20 Root stalk come in a tiny bundle—doesn’t look like much but planted and they produced beautiful leaves and are healthy. I don’t expect to get fruit till next year.

    WOW, Just WOW

    Rating

We love these plants. We live in a Strawberry growing county and have had plants over the last 47 years and these are the best we have had. Only planted a little over a week and the plants are strong and healthy.

    So excited!

    Rating

I received the plants. Unfortunately due to the extreme cold and heavy rains I wasn't able to plant for over a week. We finally got a break in the weather between storms, I hydrated the roots, planted the strawberries and they perked up and looked great in less than a day. Within 4 days they have leaf expansion and a few new leaves are started pushing. I am looking forward to them producing this spring.

    Not great results

    Rating

On arrival the plants had a white, fuzzy mold on them. I emailed and was told this was fine just wipe it off and plant. I soaked them in water according to the directions but upon separating the plants I noticed most were brown and had no green on them. I did plant them all but only 6 grew/got any leaves. I'm hoping they might come back next year but I'm not holding my breath. The only saving grace is these were on sale so I don't feel totally ripped off.

    Dying

I planted these in trays in Miracle Gro potting mini a few days plants starting dying. It looks like they are all going to die. Bad purchase.

    So disappointing

    Rating

I was really looking forward to having some homegrown strawberries for our family this summer. However, after purchasing my plants and the hanging bags, and following all of the directions, the plants have not survived. Not a single one! Very disappointing. The plants arrived as bare roots and there was Hope on three to four of the plants which did have some green leaf. I'm not sure what happened, but I will most likely never buy these again.
  23. Lisa

    Unbelievable!

    Rating

I planted these roots about 10 days ago and I am amazed with the gorgeous foliage that has grown. Excited to see the blooms!

    A beautiful Surprise

    Rating

My birthday was complete, you don't find store bought berries like these! I thank you and my son for this! He gave me the plants with blooms and no berries! The combo of his own compost and recommended fertilizer gave me berries long after my birthday...early summer and these were first year plants!
  25. L

    Much smaller than depicted

    Rating

The berries were much smaller than depicted. While the plant thrived overall, it produced extremely small berries. They were nothing like the picture depicts. The ripe berries smell was intoxicating, but the taste didn't live up to the scent. So far, they are overwintering well, so hopefully, the year's maturity will also improve the size and taste for the 2022 growing season.
