Clematis Boulevard® Ravel™ is a stunning deciduous climbing vine that brings a touch of elegance to any garden. From late spring through late summer, this prolific bloomer sets an abundance of purple-blue flowers with dark purple centers, creating a breathtaking display against a backdrop of medium green leaves. These flowers are not only a visual delight in the garden but also make lovely cut flowers for indoor arrangements.
Reaching a height of 4 to 5 feet, Clematis Ravel has a versatile vining habit that can be trained to climb trellises, arbors, posts, or fences, adding vertical interest to your garden. It also thrives in containers or can be allowed to amble along the ground in mixed beds, gracefully weaving through shrubbery. For a spectacular combination, pair Clematis Ravel with a climbing rose. The nimble clematis vines will twine around the sturdy rose stalks, mingling their blooms elegantly. While the clematis shines through the summer, the rose will take over in the fall as the clematis' blooms fade.
Clematis is renowned for its ease of growth, provided it is planted in the right location. Ensure that the leaves receive ample sunlight (approximately 6 hours), but keep the roots shaded and cool with low-growing evergreen shrubs or heavy mulch. Clematis Ravel is cold hardy to Zone 4 and flourishes in full sun to partial shade with moist, well-draining soil. Good air circulation is also beneficial for the plant's health.
As a Group 3 late-flowering clematis, Clematis Ravel blooms on new wood in summer and fall, dying back to the ground over winter. Pruning is essential for maintaining its health and vigor. In late winter, before new growth appears, prune the plant hard to remove dead or weak stems, cutting back to 2 feet or just above pairs of healthy, swelling leaf buds. If training to climb, loosely tie the vines to their support structure at this time. After the first flush of flowers in early summer, prune again to promote a second bloom. Deadheading is unnecessary, as this clematis re-grows to its mature size each summer, typically flowering later in the season.
Clematis Ravel is a resilient, beautiful addition to any garden, providing season-long interest and charm. Its ease of care and striking blooms make it a favorite among gardeners looking to add a touch of vertical elegance.
