Description / Hosta 'Cherry Berry' Plantain Lily
Small yet striking, Hosta 'Cherry Berry' grows to just 12 to 18 inches tall and wide, making it a perfect choice for small gardens or containers. Its lance-shaped leaves boast bold variegation, with green margins encircling creamy white centers. In summer, vibrant cherry red scapes emerge, holding delicate purple blooms that draw hummingbirds and butterflies. By autumn, the scapes are adorned with bright red seed pods, providing additional seasonal charm. The flowers also make elegant additions to mixed floral arrangements.
A Hosta hybrid, commonly called plantain lily, 'Cherry Berry' is a long-lived perennial hardy in Zones 4-8. With its compact, mounding habit, it establishes quickly and becomes more impressive each year. Ideal for ground cover or natural drifts, 'Cherry Berry' also shines in borders, beds, and containers. It's an excellent choice for edging shaded gardens and thrives under the canopy of mature trees, where it pairs wonderfully with spring bulbs.
'Cherry Berry' hosta is as easy to grow as it is beautiful. It thrives in dappled to full shade and performs best in rich, moist, well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. Regular watering prevents drying out, and a yearly application of slow-release fertilizer keeps it looking lush and healthy.
Plant 'Cherry Berry' hosta roots in spring, spacing them 12 inches apart and planting them 1½ to 2 inches deep for best results.
