Our experts recommend you plant Lilium Stargazer Oriental lily bulbs before the first frost in fall. Although they can be planted in early spring, fall planting allows the bulbs to establish strong roots before flowering in midsummer. These tall and slender plants grow 36 to 48 inches high, with each sturdy stem supporting 6 to 8 outward-facing, bowl-shaped blooms in vibrant pink and white. The highly fragrant flowers have a spicy scent that fills the garden, while the long, pollen-covered stamens attract pollinators like butterflies and hummingbirds. Renowned for their florist quality, Stargazer lilies make exceptional cut flowers, perfect for summer bouquets and mixed floral arrangements. When harvesting blooms, be sure to leave at least two-thirds of the stem and foliage intact to ensure the bulb regenerates for the next year's growth.
A Lilium oriental species, commonly known as the oriental lily, Stargazer is a bulbous perennial with an upright habit and a rapid growth rate. It naturalizes easily, returning each year under optimal conditions. Stargazer lilies are a must-have for any cutting garden, and they also look great when grouped in flower beds, borders, patio pots, and containers, providing reliable blooms and distinct fragrance.
To plant Stargazer oriental lily bulbs, space them 6 to 8 inches apart and 6 to 8 inches deep. Choose a location that receives 6 to 8 hours of sunlight each day and has well-draining soil. These lilies thrive in cool, medium moist soils with a slightly acidic pH. For best results, plant them with their heads in the sun and their roots shaded by low-growing companions. Mulching is essential to keep the roots cool and moist. Feed the bulbs in spring with Espoma Organic® Bulb-tone® Bulb and Flower Food as growth begins. Remove faded flowers promptly, but allow the foliage to die back naturally before cutting it down. Stargazer oriental lilies are cold hardy to Zone 3 and are naturally resistant to deer and rodents.
