Midori Star Soybean is an improvement on Midori Giant, with better seedling vigor and emergence and a longer harvest window, enhancements that benefit small and larger growers alike. Midori Star is one of the biggest and earliest soybeans available to home gardeners. Each 2- to 3-inch pod contains 2 or 3 extra-large, round, buttery seeds with a sweet flavor and fresh bite. For delicious, fresh-from-the-garden edamame, harvest the pods while they are still green and the beans are young. For soybeans, harvest pods after they have turned yellow and the seeds are light brown or beige. A healthy snack, the beans are rich in protein and nutrients, as well as fiber.
A Glycine max variety, commonly called soybean or soya bean, Midori Star is an annual legume in the Fabaceae family. The bushy plant is well-branched and grows about 20 to 24 inches high and 18 inches wide. Midori Star is 7 to 10 days later in maturity than Chiba Green. Planting both varieties will extend the edamame season. Or succession plant to prolong harvests.
A warm-season vegetable, sensitive to cold temperatures and frost, soybean seeds can be direct sown into warm spring soil after the last frost date when soil temperatures are around 60 to 75°F. Midori Star soybean grows best when planted in a full sun site with loose, fertile, moist, freely draining soil. Mulch helps to moderate soil temperature as well as to maintain soil moisture and control weeds.
