Description / Rocky Mountain Penstemon Seeds

One of the finest sources of blue color for the summer garden, Rocky Mountain Penstemon is a native U.S. plant that gardeners in many parts of the country have come to treasure. The intense blue blooms, 1 inch across and shaped somewhat like a snapdragon, open all along sturdy, erect 2½- to 3-foot stems, rising from an attractive basal rosette of rich green foliage.

The show begins in early summer and continues for more than a month, giving you enough bloomspikes to fill every vase in the house. But be sure to leave some on the plant—hummingbirds and butterflies love this Rocky Mountain Penstemon almost as much as you do, and will visit your garden in droves to sip its nectar.

Easy to grow in full sun and in fertile, well-drained soil, Rocky Mountain Penstemon can be direct sown. As its name suggests, it is native to Wyoming and Utah, but adapts well to many parts of the country. Rocky Mountain Penstemon will come true from seed, so let it self-sow for years of effortless color.

I started seed indoors under grow lights and planted seedlings outside early summer. Plants were thriving but did not bloom that year. Cold hardy evergreen foliage. This Spring they are shooting bloom stems after first rain in the middle of April. Looking forward to blooms!

10 days only and I see some germination already , I sterilize the soil to avoid any melting plants by a fungus, the germination of penstemons can be long and require patience, Thank you to Parkseeds for the fast delivery to Ontario in Canada. I don t will hesitate to order the seeds for flowers an vegetables for 2024 season despite the distance .

Slow to germinate. At first it seemed spiratic but in the end there was a high germination rate.

Amazing! 1 people found this helpful

Last year I planted these seeds in a flat seed tray indoors early spring. They came up fast so I started to harden them off outdoors. All was going well and I had so many seedlings that I was dreaming where to plant all of them and then disaster hit! A storm came up while I was not home and blew my seed tray half way across the yard. My poor seedlings were still intact in the soil but upside down and separated from the tray and each other. Heart broken, I picked up what remained of my dreams and planted them in my flower garden with little hope that they would make it. To my surprise they did grow but did not produce any flowers. The next spring however (with surviving on of the worst winters in history) I was rewarded with the most beautiful colored flowers that I have ever seen, and I am a flower lover! The color is the purest blue with an almost fluorescent violet stripe by the entrance of its throat. It is hard to describe, but trust me, it is beautiful. The hummingbirds and bees love it too! This plant is tough and stunning. Oh, make sure to plant it close enough to enjoy its beauty and the hummingbirds :)

This plant did not flower for me the 1st year, but did beautifully the 2nd year. The intense blue-violet color almost glows. Absolutely stunning and worth the wait!
