Description / Rosemary Irene™

Plant Patent #9,124. Cultivar name: 'Renzels'.

Imagine a stand of Irene tumbling over a low wall or spreading across the dry, sun-soaked ground in your garden! This tough little garden gem is one of the most ornamental plants around, yet there is no beating its usefulness when sheer coverage (and plenty of color!) is needed. This is the perfect plant for garden walls, pots, banks, or a dry, sunny patch of ground in your garden.

A superb groundcover for hot, dry locations, its habit is low and mounding, only 12 to 18 inches high but spreading vigorously 18 to 36 inches a year. In summer, deep blue-violet flowers arise in great masses. The rich color stays true even in the hottest days, refusing to bleach or fade.

Very deer and pest resistant, Irene™ is a long-lived joy in any well-drained garden soil. Best performance is in full sun. Plant Irene where you crave gorgeous color and thick coverage. The rich violet blue flowers bloom in summer and stay vibrant through heat and drought. Zones 7-10.

When I moved to a new home, I knew I planned to fill my new yard with many rosemaries here in a deer forest. The Irene which came from Park are by far healthier and huge compared to some I picked up at a local nursery.

Plants arrived in excellent condition. I plan to plant these where they will trail over a rock wall.

The 3 quart-sized pots were very well packaged, with 2 rubber bands around each pot to hold the shreds of wood on top of the plant in place. The soil was moist. The plant, however, was quite small. With my lack of plant care skills, that tiny bit of green was doomed from the start. It's not the first time I've killed a rosemary plant!I had high hopes, but all 3 seem to be dead. 3 stars, because it's what usually happens for me with rosemary. I last had a lovely shrub about 10 years ago -- it was about 5 inches across when I bought it locally and survived many winters, and grew to several feet. I simply haven't found one that would live, or if it did live for a while, survive the winter.
