Description / Sambucus Black Lace®

Sambucus Black Lace® stands true to its name with deeply cut leaves of charcoal, giving it a ferny, lacy look. With 6-inch clusters of blooms and vibrant autumn berries, this ever-changing beauty is the showstopper of any hedge, border, foundation, or specimen planting.

If you love the Japanese Maple, but live too far north to grow it, Sambucus Black Lace® is the perfect substitute. It emerges in the spring with rich black foliage and keeps its color right through summer's heat, playing backdrop to clusters of dark pink buds that open to bright, pastel pink blooms.

The early-summer flowers are followed by deep red berries that stand out beautifully against the leaves as autumn sets in. The berries invite cheerful birds to this shrub, adding even more color to the garden. Black Lace™ definitely stands out for its constant evolution through spring, summer and fall!

The result of 10 years' breeding work, Black Lace™ has already created a sensation in Western Europe, where it is the "it" shrub. The beautiful foliage gives you all the intrigue of a Japanese maple, yet it thrives in the north's chilly climate. Growing in Zones 4 to 7, it withstands cold winds, very low temperatures, and even partial shade without losing a bit of its appeal.

Black Lace™ would make a perfect hedge, foundation planting, border standout, or specimen. It reaches 6 feet tall and 8 feet wide, a perfect size for a variety of landscape uses. Design a garden display around its black leaves and early summer flowers, and WOW your neighbors.

We planted this in the spring and it has grown quite a lot. It is very beautiful but leggy. Have researched how to prune and will do that in the spring. Hope the pruning will make it a little bushier. Hasn't bloomed yet.

I received my Black Lace Elderberry quickly after ordered. It came well packed in a one quart container. It had two dark leaves and an upright stem that was cut off three inches above the ground. I expected a larger plant. I was disappointed but planted it. It is now three weeks later after receiving it. The plant is now about 6 “ high with two more leaves that are green.

grows like crazy 0 people found this helpful

It is cool looking with the dark foliage and the light pink flowers in summer, for about a week or so. However, it grows very leggy and just kind of all over the place, more than 5 feet high and 5 feet wide. By August in Denver, Zone 5 I have to aggressively trim this shrub back. Make sure to plant a good 3 feet back from walkways. Planted mine too close to a walkway, and if I'm no on top of the trimming, it blocks the walkway. Looks not so great in the winter, just sticks.
