Description / Styrax 'Fragrant Fountain'

Plant Patent #19,664

Among the finest small trees for part shade or full sun, this Japanese Snowbell offers fragrance, flowers, a weeping habit, and changing fall color. Such a beautiful multiseason performer for container or garden!

Multitudes of white blooms greet spring on this delightfully compact weeper. Shaped like fully open parachutes, they dangle from long chartreuse or yellow stems, far more profuse than older varieties and sweetly scented. As spring turns to summer, the flowers persist, set among olive-green foliage. Even after the flowers pass, the foliage remains fresh and lush all summer, then turns golden-yellow in autumn. Lovely!

And Fragrant Fountain is compact enough for large patio containers as well as the sunny to partly shaded border. Move it to just the spot you want for enjoying each of its seasonal displays! In the garden, it makes a good companion to spring-blooming bulbs, roses, and late bloomers from Shasta Daisies to Asters.

Just 6 feet high and about 5 feet wide, Fragrant Fountain has a weeping habit that works well as a specimen but also looks good draped over a horizontal garden feature, such as a fence, wall, or even a hedge. Add beautiful garden architecture, fragrance, and ever-changing color to the landscape with this deciduous beauty! Zones 5-8. Cannot ship to AZ, CA, OR, or WA.

Customer Reviews

Rating
Good for small gardens
Review by Louise
Weeping habit and relatively small stature make this a good candidate for smaller gardens. However, the pendant flowers are partially hidden by the expanding foliage, and young trees need formative pruning to attain best form, which can be appreciated in winter. Styrax can be weedy; many seeds sprout which will require removal. Fragrance is light, so site this where you can pass close to it.
