Description / SunBlaster Self-Watering Growlight Garden

The handiest and most efficient seed starter and self-watering tray we have used, this nifty countertop model combines a deep reservoir with wicking action, versatile sowing trays (which can be removed for placement of larger pots or houseplants right onto the stand), and an adjustable hood that floods the area with full-spectrum growlights. Convenient, easy to use, and so versatile.

You can start seeds, grow baby greens or salads, train up seedlings and young plants, and overwinter houseplants in the Complete Self-watering Growlight Garden. The base is a deep reservoir for water. In this reservoir is a stand, which you cover with a special wicking cloth (all of this is included, right down to the light bulbs). The cloth draws up water at just the rate your plants' roots need it, so they never sit in moisture, yet they don't dry out, either. Go ahead—fearlessly leave on vacation without worrying about what's going to happen to your seeds, seedlings, and houseplants.

The stand has enough space for the 4 seed-starting trays included with this garden kit, but they don't have to be used—the choice is yours. Each contains 12 drainage holes and distinct growing areas, but they are undivided, so you can put 12 little peat plugs into the spaces or simply fill the whole area with grow mix and sow seeds in rows. Or you can dispense with the trays altogether in favor of your own pots or seed flats. As long as there are drainage holes in the base to take up the wicking water, you're all set.

Above the stand and the seed trays is a curved, reflective hood containing two SunBlaster 6400 Kelvin T5H0 fluorescent light tubes. These are the wide-spectrum light bulbs that growing plants need, and they use 20% less energy than traditional bulbs. The curved design of the hood floods the entire growing area with full-spectrum light, giving your seedlings and plants the best possible exposure. And most importantly, the hood is adjustable, so when your seedlings emerge, you can lower it to just a few inches above the young shoots. They'll grow like crazy.

The lights plug into any standard outlet, and the entire unit is pretty compact: 24 inches wide, 14 inches deep, and 17 inches tall. The plastic components are all 100% recycled, and everything is endlessly reusable. The Complete Self-watering Growlight Garden comes with complete instructions, and assembles easily in less than 30 minutes. Not bad for a lifetime of heavy use. You're going to love this indoor garden and wonder how you ever got by without it.

My rating is more for the instructions than the product itself; I had difficulty figuring out what piece was what (especially the hardware) because nothing was labeled. As well, it would have been great if the instructions said to put the lights into the power cord first, as well as to be sure before installing without power cord the lights would be difficult to remove once installed; also the directions should state that the lights should both have the plug ends on the same side on the canopy. They did not. I am frustrated and hope I don't break anything because the lights aren't coming out. I hope I didn't waste $150+ but I'm afraid if I don't get these lights aligned correctly, that's what it is going to become, a waste of money.

GROW LIGHT GARDEN 0 people found this helpful

The only reason I gave this garden four stars and not five is because although I got it for Valentine's Day, I didn't put together until a few days ago so I have yet to see long term results as of yet. Rather than seed growing, I purchased this to transplant garden herbs during the off season so that I can still grow fresh herbs for cooking. So far so good, I planted basil, cilantro & parsley and these plants seem to be accepting of their new environment.

Perfect kitchen counter grow light! 0 people found this helpful

I love the small size footprint of this grow light! It was easy to set up even though the instructions weren’t the greatest (be sure to put the reflectors underneath the light bulbs before you finish putting it together.) I bought this because I noticed my plants that I plan to transport outside were struggling and not getting enough light through my kitchen windows alone. Ever since I built this grow light my plants have been THRIVING and I’m so excited to continue using this for future seasons and plants. The self watering aspect of this grow light is also a plus but I find I don’t always use it. I’ve been growing moonflowers and morning glories with this that I will be transporting outside soon. After I use it next for geraniums I do plan to grow some herbs with it. It looks great so I feel fine having it in my kitchen on the counter.

Easy to set up and use! 0 people found this helpful

I got mine for a Christmas present and just set it up with my BioDomes last week. Setup was really much easier than I anticipated, and the system works exactly as described (just be sure to plug the cord into the lights before you affix the lights to the dome ... the directions are a bit backwards there). I started my marigolds on Sunday; by Tuesday morning, they were sprouting!

Working like a charm 0 people found this helpful

I bought this light set to start my raft plants in. With the seed blocks and the sponge inserts it is doing exactly what I wanted. The foam seed blocks float on the water in the bottom tray and my plants are sprouting nicely. The tray is not too large so I may be buying another for next year's production and I do plan to grow leaf lettuce and spinach all year round between my outdoor aquaponic beds and this grow light sustem for winter. The only downfall of this system is the raising and lowering of the light bar. It has a thumb screw on each end that has to be loosened and tightened simultaneously, or pretty much simultaneously. It takes two hands with good control to do it. Someone with severe arthritis in their hands may not be able to do it. So far I am pleased with the system. I expect it will last many, many years with maybe just a lightbulb replacement.
