Description / Tricyrtis Samurai Toad Lily
Tricyrtis Samurai is a compact toad lily that brings late season flowers and bright foliage to shady gardens. Its lance shaped, shiny dark green leaves are edged in golden yellow, giving the plant color long before it blooms. From late summer into early fall, small orchid like flowers appear in purple with dark purple freckles, adding intricate detail when many perennials are fading.
Samurai toad lily is a natural fit for woodland gardens, borders, and containers, and it can be used as a ground cover or along pond and stream edges. Bees and hummingbirds visit the flowers, and deer tend to leave it alone. For a layered shade planting, pair it with Polygonatum odoratum 'Variegatum', Brunnera macrophylla 'Jack Frost', and Dryopteris erythrosora 'Brilliance'.
Grow in part shade to full shade; this low maintenance perennial tolerates heavy shade. Plant in organic rich, slightly acidic, well drained soil, such as chalk, loam, or sand, and keep it evenly moist without letting it dry out. Hardy in Zones 4 to 9, it forms a compact, erect clump. Gold edged leaves combined with freckled late summer flowers make Samurai a standout for brightening deep shade.
