Description / Tulip Queens Garden Mix

Create a late-spring spectacular in your sunny garden with this Tulip Queens Garden Mix of blue tones! In the Tulip Queens Garden Mix, you get two varieties of late-blooming tulip plus a hardy native plant, the easy-to-grow Blue Camassia! There's no more beautiful way to finish out spring than with this display!

Beginning in mid- to late spring, you'll be treated to all the various forms and shades of blue with the three varieties in this collection. Tulip Queens Garden Mix is named for Queen of the Night Tulip, a ravishing Mayflowering (Single Late) Tulip that has been honored by the Royal Horticulture Society with its highest award, and wows every garden and vase it enters. This bowl-shaped tulip is generally agreed to be the darkest in the family, with charcoal-black tones among the deep violet. Standing 24 inches high, it is a majestic presence in the spring bulb garden, its color unequalled.

Just a few inches shorter than Queen of the Night, but every bit as showy, is the famous Black Parrot, introduced nearly 80 years ago and never bettered for dramatic twisty form and rich black highlights on burgundy petals. The form is bold and asymmetrical, each bloom distinctively different on 16- to 18-inch stems. Like Queen of the Night, it lasts a long time and catches the eye from far away.

Blue Camassia is a change of pace from the tulips, offering spires of pure azure blue 2 to 3 inches wide, filled with wide-open starry blooms. Camassia is a native American perennial, very easy to grow and tolerant of much adversity, and you will find it flowering freely long past the tulips' season of color. Reaching 30 inches high, it is a valuable source of blue color for the spring and summer garden.

Plant Tulip Queens Garden Mix in any sunny, well-drained soil. It needs no attention, offers striking colors and forms, and flowers for several weeks. You'll love its rich deep hues as spring turns to summer!

I planted the mix last year inside the area with white daffodils. The effect was amazing! The tulips grew to be very attractive, almost black, with two beautiful shapes -- one smooth, one ragged -- with blue strikes on the inside. Blue Camassia, on the other hand, didn't bloom at all and took one star away from this review.
