Description / Twizzle Mix Penstemon Seeds

The Twizzle family just can't stop winning awards . . . and no wonder. This mixed variety introduces a whole new color into the beardtongue family, as well as flowering the first year from seed. Recipient of both America's and Europe's highest honors for flowering seed, Twizzle Mix Penstemon will dazzle you.

Flag-shaped mixed blooms flutter all along the tall, slender stems of this native perennial, signaling to butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds that a nectar source is near. Boasting half the foliage of older varieties, Twizzle Mix Penstemon also sports twice the flowering stem, bringing you longer, more elegant blooming wands without sacrificing plant size. Twizzle Mix Penstemon is compact enough for containers.

And best of all, Twizzle Mix Penstemon is open pollinated. This means the plant will come true from seed. Let it self-sow in your garden or collect the seeds in fall and plant them wherever you want an injection of summer-long color.

Sow these seeds in fall for earlier spring blooms, or start indoors in late winter for first-year summer blooms. Twizzle Mix Penstemon doesn't mind. A long-lived perennial in most climates, Twizzle Mix Penstemon makes itself right at home.

Quite drought-tolerant once established in the garden, Twizzle Mix Penstemon sets masses of 1- to 1½-inch tubular blooms. It loves dry soil and doesn't mind poor fertility, heat, or other stresses. Twizzle Mix Penstemon is a fine choice for containers as well as the sunny border.

I'm not dazzled 2 people found this helpful

I've never grown penstemon but I was attracted to this specific plant and the glowing description. Of the multiple types of seeds I started indoors this year, this was the only failure. Germination was poor. Of the few seedlings that sprouted, most were weak and I ultimately had only 3 plants that made it into the garden. Those 3 plants seem healthy and have survived through a hot, dry spell and subsequent cool, wet period. Unfortunately, it is now the second week in August and only 1 plant shows signs that it may bloom. Despite the very positive description of this plant, I'm still waiting to be dazzled.

Disappointed in twizzle penstemen 4 people found this helpful

    Rating

The seeds sprouted very well, and plants did okay at first. Then they eventually died one by one. I only have one plant left, and it is not thriving. The description sounded like a prize winner, but was not the case. I also planted and cared for Rocky Mountain penstemen. They must be much hardier. The plants are all thriving so far.

Disappointed 3 people found this helpful

I only got three seeds to sprout out of the 25 I was given. I just hope the three make it to the garden stage. I was really hoping for at least five or six as I was allowing that much for a space set aside for them.

Zero germination 7 people found this helpful

    Rating

I usually have very good experiences with Park Seed, but this product was a disappointment. For the cost, you get just a tiny number of seeds (fairly typical for a newly developed hybrid). That's fine if the seeds have a good germination rate, but after many weeks I still have no sign of life from these. They were sown in a sterile seed starting mix, kept lightly moist, and kept at 60s-70s during the day and 50s at night and in bright light...which seems to be ideal according to what I can glean from the packet? Everything else I sowed at the same time has now been potted up, or planted out in the garden. Still nothing but sad, empty cells where all the Twizzle Mix Penstemon was sown. Was I supposed to stratify? If so, this wasn't indicated. I thought I was being frugal by buying seeds, but in hindsight I wish I'd saved my money and bought the plant instead.
