Description / Viking Purple Potato - 2 Pound Bag

Days to Maturity: 90 to 100 from direct sow

This is one potato that's just as pretty as it tastes. The smooth, red-splashed purple skin of this mid-season variety contrasts beautifully with the pure white flesh held within. These gorgeous round tubers are perfect for baking or mashing with just a little salt and pepper to savor their creamy, sweet, gourmet flavor.

Viking Purple Potato is an excellent storage variety, allowing you to enjoy more of your crop over a longer period. It produces mostly 3½ to 4-inch round tubers, but will occasionally wow you with a few whoppers. Compact plants are great for growing more potatoes in less space, and offer excellent resistance to scab and tolerance of heat and drought. Each 2-pound bag will sow 20 to 25 feet of row and yield more than 25 pounds of potatoes. They're simply the best way to grow potatoes.

Like all potatoes, Viking Purple Potato fares best in sandy, enriched soil, but if you have heavy or clay soil, just use a raised bed or plant the tubers more shallowly, mulching them well with straw.

I planted these about two weeks ago in containers under pop up green house tents. They are already about 5 inches tall and seem to be growing an inch or more each day. Seed potatoes are the way to go!

Viking potatoes 1 people found this helpful

These potatoes are the best I have ever grown. My grandchildren entered them in the county fair a couple years ago and took best of show because they are so pretty. Nicely uniform and the flavor is wonderful. They bake, fry, mash and hold together in soups. They are very difficult to find and I am so glad I found them on your site. They keep very well for a red potato

I have planted these in large pitas and in ground and they are always well shaped and good sized. They store well also.
