Description / Vitis St Croix Red Grape
Vitis St Croix Red Grape is a deciduous grapevine that seamlessly merges aesthetics and productivity. Cherished for its fruit and foliage, this woody vine graces your space with tiny yellowish-green blooms in mid to late spring, yielding medium-sized clusters of dark bluish-red grapes. Harvestable from early summer to early fall, these grapes feature a sweet flavor, ideal for both table consumption and crafting a superb medium to full-bodied, dry, deep red wine with soft tannins and delightful fruit aromas having currant and other dried fruit notes.
Adapting effortlessly to diverse climates, the St Croix Red Grape stands as a cold hardy vine, resilient even in Zone 3's winter conditions. Allow the grapevine to flourish freely in its first year, then stake or post it after a substantial pruning in the second or third year, retaining only 2 or 3 buds on the strongest stem. Enhance fruit production with regular spraying and pruning. Cultivate these grapevines on a wire trellis, espalier them on a courtyard wall, or train them on an arbor, pergola, or fence for a captivating garden feature.
Optimal growth occurs in sunny locations with deep, well-draining soil, though these adaptable vines also thrive in various soils, including clay and loam enriched with organic matter. Ensure good drainage and shelter the site from winter winds. Shallow cultivation and mulching add further benefits. With good resistance to powdery mildew and black rot, the St Croix Red Grape is a delightful addition to your garden.
The vine is self-fertile and will bear fruit without any pollen from other varieties.
Grapes ship as 1-year-old plants.
