Montana Planting Zones & Schedule

Montana’s USDA growing zones range from Zone 3 to Zone 6. Most of the state falls into Zones 3 and 4, where cold-hardy plants may thrive but warm-season crops should be started early indoors.

Some areas along the western border of Montana, like Hamilton and Moissouli, fall into Zones 5 and 6. The climate gets a little warmer in these areas, making them suitable for cool-season crops like carrots, peas, spinach, and kale.

  • *Keep in mind that frost can occur before or after these dates. Watch your local weather to determine the best time to plant.

  • The growing season in Montana lasts an average of about 135 days statewide, ranging from less than 90 frost-free days in some areas to over 150 in others. Refer to the planting schedules below to determine the best timing for your zone.
