Description / Hens & Chicks Hardy Succulent Blend Seeds

Hens & Chicks Hardy Succulent Blend contains some of the most popular succulents for hot, dry gardens or container growth all the way north through Zone 5, Sempervivum forms a neat, bright rosette of foliage that typically spreads freely by offshoots, creating a colorful and interesting display in almost any setting.

Hens & Chicks Hardy Succulent Blend mix lets you enjoy the range of Sempervivum's foliage, from gray-green to deep magenta-mahogany tones, including some variegated types. The blooms also vary, from upright to pendant and from yellow to pink shades.

Poor germination 0 people found this helpful

Disappointed. It’s been a month and a half and only 5 out of the 300 seeds have germinated. Planting instructions followed. I understand it can take up to a year…. But only 5 so far?

I was able to get most of the seed to germinate. I used a soil less mix, did not cover them with soil, pressed into the surface only, bottom watered- and provided bottom heat from a plant mat set at 72 degrees. They appeared in about 5 days. I would attach a picture if allowed. They are big enough now that the only concern I have is that they all look alike. Some have red tips, but most look like a common sempervivian. Only time will tell if there is a variety of types. I would guess there are at least 50 seedlings.

Germinated well 1 people found this helpful

My seeds germinated really well despite some of the other poor reviews. I started them in coconut coir with a heat mat and a grow light. They are tiny but to my surprise germinated in less than a week, which surprised me because the packet says some may take up to a year.

One plant 0 people found this helpful

Packaging and shipping was excellent, but similar to the other reviewer, even with careful planting and a seedling heat mat, I have one seedling from a packet of 300 seeds. It's been over a month and I'm not feeling hopeful that more will germinate.

You will have so many hen's and chick's , you will need to keep buying pots and dishes , They are very hardy , just keep them out of the rain ! The only problem that I have found is that they SELL OUT FAST . I will have them in my cart , go back as little as a few hours , and they have sold out !!!

Great for starting lots of hens and chicks! 0 people found this helpful

I had about 60 seedlings from one packet two weeks after sowing. I'm sure I could have gotten more if I kept the conditions the same, but I didn't want to risk getting damping off!

Fun but little variation 0 people found this helpful

    Rating

These were fun and easy to start from seed, but I was hoping for more variety. Nearly all that germinated were the same green variety. I started them by placing the seed on the surface of a moist seedling start mix, placed the container in a plastic bag, and put it in my garage for 2 weeks to give them a cold stratification. Temperatures ranged from about 20F to 40F, averaging about 32F. Placing them in the frig would produce the same results. After 2 weeks, I brought them inside and placed them on a heat mat. Numerous seeds germinated within about a week or so. The seeds were not covered, they received natural room lighting, but did not need a grow light or window light. I am curious to find out this spring after the snow melts if they survived the winter in my Zone 5 garden.

Amazing Diversity! 0 people found this helpful

I bought these on a whim. I knew there were different kinds of "hens and chicks," and thought this would be an easy way of getting a few more. Some sprouted almost at once; others took a couple of months. I didn't have the patience (or room) to wait the year I was told I could. A few are plain green, yet even they show variations in leaf shape. There seem to be at least 100 different kinds: red and plain; red and fuzzy, green and red in various fuzzy and non-fuzzy variations: some are still small enough to need a jeweler's loupe for good viewing, For sure, you've given me a new hobby!
