Description / Fuyu Persimmon Tree

Until you have tasted a persimmon fresh from your garden, you can't imagine the delectable succulent-sweet flavor of this Asian delicacy. And now you can have bushels of the fruit every autumn from an attractive, easy-to-grow little tree that thrives in temperate and warm climates!

Fuyu is an early-bearing variety particularly well suited to American climates. It sets dozens of luscious fruits, each one rounded, firm, and turning from green to yellow to bright orange as it matures. Expect 50 pounds or more of fruit every year, beginning the second or third season after planting.

This tree reaches 10 to 12 feet tall in containers or (eventually) 30 to 40 feet high and wide in the garden. It tolerates any light from full sun to a half day of shade. It is indifferent to soil type provided the drainage is good, but thrives best in very moist soils, and doesn't mind slightly wet, boggy conditions. If your garden soil has proven too wet for other fruit trees, it's just right for Fuyu! And if it's not overly moist, just be sure to provide regular watering during dry spells. This tree is quite adaptable. It even fares well in large containers, enabling it to be grown north of its hardiness range and brought to a frost-free location for winter.

Persimmons are the most widely-grown tree in Asia, and Fuyu is the most popular variety. It offers spectacular autumn color as the leaves turn to bright shades of gold, orange, and red. Hardy to 0 degrees F. Zones 7-11, or anywhere in containers.

First year, rabbit chewed down to almost nothing. I thought oh my goodness it's gone. Next spring, new shoots came out and grew 4 feet high in one season, of course with 2ft rose cone wrap around it to protect from rabbit. Hopefully next year I'll get some fruit. Beautiful tree. Love it.
