Description / Buddleia 'Miss Molly'

What a beautiful shade of red. We call it "sangria," but really it's an ever-changing blend of red, magenta, and burgundy, far and away the closest butterfly bush ever to the true red—that elusive fire-engine shade—gardeners have tried to add their collection for decades.

These bottlebrush blooms begin in midsummer and continue all the way to frost in the sunny garden, attracting every butterfly, bee, and hummingbird for miles around. Miss Molly is very free-flowering, so cut all the blooms you like for the vase. There will be more in no time.

Reaching 5 feet high and 5 to 6 feet wide, Miss Molly grows quickly, and needs very little care to continue flowering beautifully year after year. Cut it down to about one-third its original height in late winter and early spring to improve branching and flower production and let it go. There is no easier plant for the sunny garden.

Miss Molly was developed at North Carolina State University by Dennis Werner, who bred it from Buddleia Miss Ruby x Attraction, classic varieties with terrific vigor and durability.

Miss Molly blooms vary depending on climate with more red tones in warmer climates and more purple in cooler regions.

This variety of Buddleia has been approved as a seedless butterfly bush cultivar and is considered sterile, producing less than two percent viable seeds, so it will not spread. It is approved for sale in all states without restriction. https://www.oregon.gov/ODA/programs/NurseryChristmasTree/Pages/ButterflyBush.aspx

Arrived health last spring and has continued to thrive despite the sharp and frequent temperature changes and high humidity here. It is now nearly summer again and Miss Molly was already blooming in the spring (despite the fact that I forgot to cut her back in the winter/early spring). I did cut out last year's old, dead branches once she was in bloom this year. I look forward to continuing to watch her grow and bloom.

Arrived alive and in good condition. Small in size but grew quickly. By the end of the summer it measured about 2' x 3' and full of blooms. Seems to have survived a Maine winter.

I bought this butterfly bush last year. I had not bought plants through the mail before and was so impressed with the plant as well as the packaging. The plant was small but beautifully shaped. And would you believe... it bloomed that first year! I bought it because my little black pug's name is Miss Mollie and I have a photo of her smelling the fragrant blooms. And this year it has taken off and is healthy and in bud already! (That 107 degrees last summer did not harm it!) I have since bought another shrub from Park Seed and have not been disappointed.
