Description / Comet Purple Hybrid Eggplant Seeds

70 days from setting out transplants.

Purple Comet is the eggplant you've been dreaming of. This Asian variety has far fewer seeds than the traditional teardrop-shaped types. Its brilliant neon-violet skin is quite thin and tender. The flesh is pure white, succulent, and absolutely delicious. Even the extra-large foliage and bright purple blooms are attractive. You can pick Purple Comet young, if you need to, without sacrificing one jot of flavor.

Fewer seeds means less bitterness, and Purple Comet is entirely bitter-free. No soaking, no salting, no puckering at the flavor. These long, slender fruits are packed with white flesh, sweet and meaty. About 10 inches long and 2 inches wide at full maturity, these eggplants are substantial, and the thinner, more delicate skin means less waste and more useable "meat".

Purple Comet can also picked young, as a gourmet baby veggie, without loss of flavor or texture. This means that you can stagger your harvest, picking just what you need without having to worry about bringing in the whole crop at once.

You will love the look of this plant, even before the handsome fruit sets. The foliage is large and tropical-looking, while the blooms are a rich shade of purple and quite large. Then when the ultra-bright eggplants begin growing longer and longer, it's just the icing on the cake.

Begin seeds indoors 8 to 10 weeks before planning to set out. Eggplant is a warm-weather crop, so wait until after danger of frost before transplanting seedlings into the sunny garden or patio container.

Don't bother 0 people found this helpful
Started inside, planted outside after Mother's Day in NJ. Almost all of the plants have died or are dying. Far too delicate for the climate here ( which is not that harsh ). Had to buy Ichiban clones at the garden center.

All seeds failed to germinate 0 people found this helpful

I started all my seeds, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant and basil at the same time in a 72 plug peat tray as always. Everything germinated but these seeds. It was very disappointing. I waited two weeks in case they were just slow, but nothing happened.

didn't germinate 0 people found this helpful

Normally all my Park Seed products have an amazing germination rate. I must have gotten a distressed packet for this one, because not one plant germinated. Bummer! This is the first time I've ever had anything like this happen with Park Seeds, so I'm assuming this is a one-time thing. Judging from the other reviews that may be the case.

Sturdy and delicious 2 people found this helpful

    Rating

A fairly compact, well-branched plant with excellent-flavored medium-sized fruits. Plants had no major disease or pest issues. Most impressively, mine even showed some resistance to root-knot nematodes, with very clean roots at end of season while adjacent varieties of eggplant were badly weakened and roots were a mess.

This is fantastic for having chips of egg-plant. Kids love the small chip to munch on.. somewhat playful! I love to serve egg-plant chips in place of the hugh slices... it's an easy vegetable to prepare and cooks quickly ... tastes great.
