Description / Summer Carnival Hollyhock Mix Seeds

All-America Selections (AAS) Winner 1972

In 4 vibrant shades, these big semi- to fully-double flowers arise all along tall, sturdy stalks beginning just 4 months from sowing. An annual Summer Carnival Hollyhock is a long-blooming, very colorful series so garden-worthy that it received an AAS Award. Tall and stately, it blooms all summer for a rich display of big powderpuff blossoms in every shade of pink, rose, red, and yellow.

The 4-inch blooms are richly hued, and will not fade in the summer sun. Superb for cutting, they open from the bottom of the stalk upwards, keeping you in fresh blooms for weeks on end. And this stunning series sets its blooms even lower on the stalk than most hollyhocks, for a little more color on every stalk.

Easy to grow in full sun and almost any well-drained soil, this annual really takes off with a top-dressing of cow manure.

Planted them a week ago still waiting. Have two wild plants so I thought I'd buy some seeds. Some in full shade, rest in partial shade late afternoon.

Here near Kansas City, Zone 6a, it gets down to Zero or colder most winters. I plant these jewels in very fertile prepared soil on a southern exposure. The first year they don't bloom and they stay alive through the winter and bloom the following year. So they live only two years. I fertilize regularly and get luxuriant large leaves about 10 inches across so each plant needs 3 feet of space to grow and get light. If you fertilize as much as I do, expect to attract pests. So I spray with a good rose spray with a fungicide too. The trouble is worth it. Two inch double blooms on spikes that are 8 feet tall before the first killing frost may be expected with good fertilizer and waterings to keep them moist. And they are such a dramatic sight from inside the house when planted near windows. Plant them early, as soon as danger of frost is past. Keep them strong the first year and you will be rewarded the second year!

Like: really does flower first year (the seedlings I put in full sun were blooming by August; in partial sun by September), half came out as single flowers, peach and burgundy flowers showed up for me too. Dislike: needs staking, bees seem to be having a hard time finding or getting to the pollen on double flowers. I bought this mix as an adjunct to the Happy Lights Mix I really wanted but weren't blooming yet, specifically for the first year bloom. Since I was going for single flowers and a wider color range, I was surprised and delighted to see some in this mix. The doubles are beautiful too. There is conflicting information about whether this is an annual or a perennial, so I will have to wait and see if this comes back next year. If it does, I will keep it along with my other hollyhocks.
