Description / Fresno Pepper Seeds

Days to Maturity: 75 from transplant

If you grow only one hot pepper this year, consider making it Fresno. This mildly hot (5,000 to 10,000 Scovilles) pepper is a very heavy producer, with consistently glossy, high-quality fruit. It needs little water during the growth season compared with many others, and you can tailor its heat level by picking it green for mildest flavor, deep red for hottest, and orange for a happy medium.

Fresno was introduced in 1952 by Clarence Brown, and was immediately recognized as a heavy producer of top-quality fruit. It is not suitable for drying into spice, but is ideal for eating fresh, stuffing, canning, pickling, frying, sauteing, and more. It looks as good as it tastes, measuring just 2 inches long and about an inch in diameter across the shoulders, with a high gloss and smooth tapered shape.

Also known as Chile Caribe or Chile Cera, Fresno peppers are frequently mistaken for Jalapeño, but have a more complex flavor. Cooking brings out a smokiness in the flesh that is very tasty. And chances are you'll have plenty of peppers to experiment with, because these 24- to 30-inch plants are well-branched and packed with fruit.

Massive yields from this pepper. Excellent germination and growth on the plants. Consider for ornamental use as well. Very striking.

Still Hopeful 1 people found this helpful

Out of 25 seeds, only 2 germinated. It is now mid-July and one of the two plants is covered in newly formed peppers. Yay! I hope the other plant can catch up before the growing season is over. Out of all the pepper seeds I bought in 2023, all germinated easily except for the Oranos and these Fresnos. I do look forward to cooking with these!!

Got 1 plant out of 25 seeds! 0 people found this helpful

I am confused as to why these Fresno seeds did not germinate well for me in 2023. Maybe they were better in 2022? This year I have have great luck germinating most of my Park Seed seeds with the exception of this one and one other pepper type. At least I did get one seedling out of this pack, and it is growing quite well so far. I am hoping that it will produce well this summer.

One of our favorite peppers 1 people found this helpful

This pepper has a great level of heat. It's not for the ultra-hot lovers, but for those of us that like some heat without burning our faces off, it's perfect. It's reliable, both in heat level and productivity. It's one we grow every year!

A great medium hot pepper 1 people found this helpful

I have grown these many years in beds and containers. They germinate reliably and are extremely prolific! A great find for anyone, but very rewarding for a beginning gardner. Allowed to fully ripen to a deep red, they are eye-catching and very flavorful. Comparable in heat to jalopenos. I use them in stir fries, freeze them, make hot pepper jam and pickle them. All good!

Performed best of 8 varieties tried summer 2018. Plants in containers did as well as in ground. Green fruits on container plants brought inside under grow lights continue to ripen.

Fresno 5251 for short season areas 1 people found this helpful

My location is wooded Northern PA at 1800 ft; growing peppers is problematic. This year's peppers include this Fresno (5271) and Early Jalapeno. They were started indoors in containers, under LED lights. When they were taken outdoors, some went into the ground and some were potted up to larger containers. Both varieties have done somewhat better in containers. The Fresnos held up better during some un-typical hot weather. It's now mid-August and I don't know if the Fresnos are going to make it to red. (They are now an almost-irredescent lime-green.) The Fresno and Jalapeno are comparable in taste/heat.
