Description / Savanna Hybrid Mustard Green Seeds
Day to Maturity: 20
The earliest mustard green we grow, Savanna hybrid sets huge, tasty green leaves less than 3 weeks after planting. A great choice for baby greens as well as mature mustard, Savanna offers uniform, bushy plants that hold their harvest in the field much longer than open-pollinated types. Boasting high garden performance combined with great yields, Savanna offers a mild, rich flavor that the whole family will enjoy.
This mustard green is useful for both spring and fall crops. In spring, Savanna holds very well if the weather turns warm too early. Most mustards will acquire a bitter, sharp flavor if exposed to too much heat, but Savanna resists this well, extending your season by several weeks. In fall, it holds up well to first frosts, with no loss of texture.
Sow seed outdoors in early spring, or for fall crops, 6 to 8 weeks before first fall frost. It can also be started indoors for transplant. Sowing successively (new plantings every 2 or 3 weeks) is a great way to keep fresh greens growing longer. Savanna works well in patio containers and is ornamental enough to plant among your cool-season flowers, such as pansies, snapdragons, and primroses.
Space (or thin) the seedlings 3 to 5 inches apart in the garden for baby greens or 12 inches apart for full-sized mustard plants. Ideally, the rows should be about 15 inches apart. Mustard greens tolerate light frost but are not as cold hardy as collards or kale, so for growing in autumn, keep an eye on the weather and pick these greens before a killing frost is forecast. For spring crops, be sure to harvest before the plant goes to flower.
