Undaunted® Ruby Muhly Grass Seeds
Boy, are we happy to offer this native Texan grass in economical seed form. Undaunted® Ruby Muhly Grass is Pink Muhly Grass's "ruby" cousin, and this gorgeous ornamental grass boasts greater cold hardiness, native vigor, and an easy and quick growth from seed. Save a bundle by picking up a few packets of Undaunted® Ruby Muhly Grass today for years of brilliant color in borders and containers all over your sunny landscape.
Undaunted® Ruby Muhly Grass is a species of Muhlenbergia known as Ruby Muhly (though the old folks prefer its less romantic name of Seep Muhly) for its darker, redder blooms. Native to Texas and other parts of the southwest, it offers handsome gray-green foliage held in a lovely arching spray on plants that seldom reach more than 15 to 18 inches high and 24 inches wide. The flowers begin in late summer and continue through autumn into winter, turning from clear, sparkly burgundy through shades of mauve and rose to rich amber. The lovely arc they create on the plant has led to yet another common name for this grassHalo Muhly.
But the real benefit of this Ruby Muhly is its cold hardiness. It survives the tough winters of zone 5 without losing a root, yet also withstands those punishing dry summers we all seem to be having more and more of these days. Undaunted® Ruby Muhly Grass is a long-lived, low-maintenance joy for any sunny spot.
Starting the seed is easy. Indoors, cover the seeds lightly or drop into the hole of the Bio Sponge in your Bio Dome. Keep them in a 68 degree Fahrenheit room until they germinate (within a week or two), and do not let the Bio Sponge or seed tray dry outbottom-water it to keep it moist but not wet. Then grow them on in colder conditionsperfect for those chilly winter rooms. And if you want to start the seed outdoors, press the seed carefully into the soil as soon as it can be worked in spring.
Find a great place for this grass and then plant it freely, pampering it with excellent soil drainage and plenty of water the first season. Once it takes root, it will pretty much self-maintain in all but the harshest climates. You're going to see how Undaunted® Ruby Muhly Grass lives up to its name.

Zone 7b/8a Good progress
Review byTerri M
I put one seed in each seed tray pocket and hoped for the best. It took forever for germination! I transplanted them into 2 pots of 5 seedlings each and placed them on our pool retaining wall in full sun. I watered them daily due to the dry weather NC suffered in June. They flourished and grew strong root systems. Sadly, I didn't transplant to the ground before vacation so they suffered a bit from lack of watering. I transplanted one pot of the seedlings. The roots were sturdy and handled transplanting well. They are grasses, so I think they'll do ok this next season. I liked how they looked before my vacation so I ordered another seed packet. I'll be planting them in January for an early spring planting in the garden. Patience might be a good word for those wanting to grow this plant from seed. I'll update you next summer. But, so far, so good; I'm encouraged.

Wait 'till next year!
Review byDoug D.
I purchased 100 Undaunted Ruby Muhly seeds in spring 2020. On May 1 about a third of the seeds were pressed into each of three three-gallon containers filled with Miracle Gro potting soil, pots placed in a sunny location and soil kept moist. Germination appeared nil, but at six weeks, like clockwork, seeds in all three containers began to pop. Once started the grass grew remarkably fast and by late August plants had formed healthy clumps w/ 6-10-inch dark-green blades. On Labor Day the clumps were transplanted to permanent, mostly sunny locations in anticipation of a long, cold Zone 4b northern Michigan winter. Early next spring the clumps were cut back to 2 inches in height. All three survived winter and began to grow quickly as temperatures rose. In summer the plants grew somewhat rounded, about the size of a soccer ball, until August when a heat wave stifled further growth. Plants didn’t grow any more, nor did they die out. There was NO flowering or ruby-like color changes in the fall, just typical yellowing like common grasses, after two full growing seasons. Plants grew into rounded grass mounds but there is no hint of colorful “ornamental” grass yet, but they do show lots of potential. I grade the Ruby Muhly growing experience as a solid B- or 2 ½ stars. In spring 2021 I bought another 100 seeds and followed the same planting procedures and got exactly the same results… three more healthy green clumps, no flowering. The major downside of buying and growing Undaunted Ruby Muhly is the cost of the seeds which is expensive.

Third year a Charm?

On May 1 about a third of the seeds were pressed into each of three three-gallon containers filled with Miracle Gro potting soil, pots placed in a sunny location and kept the soil moist. Germination appeared nil, but at six weeks, like clockwork, seeds in all three containers began to pop! Estimated germination rate 50-60%. Once started the grass grew remarkably fast and by late August plants had formed into clumps of 6-10 inch dark-green blades. On Labor Day the three clumps were each transplanted to permanent, mostly sunny locations in anticipation of a long, cold Zone 4b-5 northern Michigan winter. In early spring the clumps were cut back to 2 inches in height. All three survived winter and began to grow again quickly as the temperature rose. In 2021 the plants steadily grew somewhat rounded, about the size of a soccer ball until August when a heat wave apparently stifled further growth. They didn’t grow any more nor did they die out. There was no flowering or ruby-like color changes in the fall, just typical yellowing like common grasses, after two full growing seasons. I grade the Ruby Muhly growing experience as a solid B. The only downside of buying and growing Undaunted Ruby Muhly is the high cost of the seeds.
